Homeowner justified in shooting armed and masked intruder

Authorities said that a man was wearing a mask and was armed when he broke into his former home in Monticello last week and was fatally shot by the homeowner. Authorities also said it appears that the homeowner was justified in shooting the intruder, who was pronounced dead at the scene. As police responded to the residence, the homeowner armed himself with a firearm. During the course of the break-in, the suspect, who was masked and armed, gained entry to the home by breaking out a basement window. The homeowner was home at the time with his 10-year-old son. Upon seeing the armed intruder emerge from the basement, the homeowner discharged his firearm three times, and the intruder was shot twice and died at the scene… Continue reading »

Armed homeowner walked in on burglary of his home; shoots one suspect

The Haines City Police Department said a man and his girlfriend came home around 1:30 a.m. in the morning to find two burglars standing in his kitchen. Scared for his and his girlfriend's safety, the homeowner — a legal gun owner — fired five shots from a 9mm handgun at the suspect closest to him. After shooting the suspect, the homeowner left his house to drive to the police department. While on the way there, the homeowner was stopped by the police who began interviewing him about the incident. When officers arrived at the home, neither of the men were immediately found. Police later found one of the suspects at a nearby park. “He had four bullet wounds. Two in the chest and two in his lower extremities — his legs," the chief said. As for the homeowner, Haines City Police Goreck says he isn’t in trouble. “Based on the totality of evidence at this time, it does appear to be a case of stand your ground," he said… Continue reading »
